No Map Needed

Milk & Honey

As we embark on our journey this New Year, many of us map out plans to attain new goals, achieve desired tasks and improve areas in their life.  We feel it is a fresh start to accomplish what we think needs changed.  Others stand at the start of this New Year and have no clue where to begin.  Some even feel nudged, but to what?  Have you ever been nudged to move on a feeling and yet have no clue where it will take you or exactly what you should do?

In Genesis 12, Abraham set out with all the wealth he had and all the people of his household, without a map or reliable transportation.  This was the adventure God had nudged Abraham to go on.  I find it difficult to imagine how hard it was to get everyone ready to depart.  With the packing, loading and organizing–it wasn’t easy! This adventure was more permanent, like a move.  There was even more to pack and organize!  What about food and bathrooms and still no map? How would they navigate where they were going?  God had told Abraham that He would show him (v.1).

Sometimes God asks us to take the first step without knowing the destination, the condition of the road or even with whom we will travel.  Faith is trusting Him and taking the first step knowing He will show you the next one too.  Abraham took a step of obedience by packing up and moving out.  “By faith Abraham, when called to go…obeyed and went (Hebrews 11:8 NIV).”  He left behind family and the life he had known to follow the One True God who promised him blessing.

God offers us blessings, too, when we obey and follow His leading.  At times we may see the reasons and move joyfully, while other times we may feel confused and reticent to go.  Obedience is all He asks of us, He will take care of all other details.  Just as Abraham didn’t need a map, we don’t either.  And just like Abraham, we will be blessed when we act in faithful obedience.

As you stand at this new beginning, what is the Lord asking of you?  Be courageous and take the first step.  You will never know the blessings He has in store for you unless you move.  He will guide you all the way.
